History v Present Time & The World Map
Jacqui & Martin Having feedback from young people, many want to be taught all about our world in its present form Where countries are, continents, what are the countries known for, currency and much more. This session will take a walk throughout the world map and also drop in how to travel there. It may lead to an adventure!! If you have a lot of knowledge in this subject we would love volunteers to come and talk about countries you have visited, or are from and how you travel. History v present time This is a very popular activity. Martin is one of those people who has a wealth of knowledge on many subjects. Martin brings in worksheets and talks to the YP about history, and brings it to its current time which makes it relevant to our YP. It is also led by YP in a way it can be easily diverted off the chosen subject and leads onto others conversations. Actively engaging and can lead to trips along the way. The session will begin with History v Present time and flow into The World Map
Global Perspective & Political Geography 14-16 years
Global Perspective & Political Geography 14-16 years
Global Perspectives is a gripping course that is both cross-curricular and skills-based and taps into the way learners of today enjoy learning, including teamwork, presentations and projects. The emphasis is on developing the ability to think critically about a range of global issues where there is always more than one point of view. Students use research, reasoning and questioning to gain this understanding and form their own judgements. It is an opportunity for enquiry into, and reflection on, key global issues from different perspectives: personal, local/national and global. The course is not about getting everybody to think identically; rather it is a matter of opening minds to the complexity of the world and of human thought and encouraging empathy for the diversity of human experience and feeling.

Visit by London Mining Network
Today we are being visited by Kerima who has 2 workshops to deliver. These workshops are aimed at ages 10 plus, if your YP can engage they are welcome to join us. If they are 8 or under they will need an adult with them. One is a Phone Cycle Game How much does your smartphone really cost? LMN deliver educational workshops in schools and in the community based on a board game depicting the lifecycle of a smart phone. Focusing on phones is a tangible way to transform the dark, often abstract, world of extractivism into a relatable problem with potential solutions. Made in 2017 by LMN education worker, Kerima Mohideen, the PhoneCycle game is not just a game but a collaborative learning workshop. The aim is to raise awareness of and stimulate conversation about the social and environmental impacts involved in producing, consuming and disposing of phones and to discuss what we can do about it. Life Above The Coal This workshop is based on the true story of two frontline communities in Colombia who have been resisting the impacts of a massive open cast mine on their lands and livelihoods for over thirty years. Frontline communities are already being severely impacted by the effects of climate change and may have limited access to the resources that could help them mitigate those effects. Many have, for decades, been directly and adversely affected by the mining and drilling carried out on their land including by those companies most responsible for carbon emissions. We in the UK have benefitted from this. The coalmine in this story provides coal for UK power stations. Since 2000 it has been part-owned by BHP, one of the top 20 fossil fuel firms behind one third of carbon emissions since 1965. In order to keep this accessible for schools, some of the story has been omitted, most importantly the story of the struggles of the workers at the mine for better wages and conditions. It should be noted that their union, Sintra Carbon, supports the communities who have been evicted or face eviction and who are opposed to the relocation of the river as the mine expands. These communities in turn have supported the miners` strikes. There is solidarity between people with seemingly opposing interests.
